Branding
With the Dota 2 Netflix series being worked on at the same time we were able to utilize a lot of material and references from that to inspire where we landed. We wanted to make the tenth International feel special as well by using gold as the primary theme. From there we iterated on various concept art to solidify the final color palette, look, and feel.
Website
Approaching the Battle Pass website is always a bit anxiety inducing. This year was no exception. I work in wireframes for a majority of the project as content fluctuates quite a bit throughout the development. Figuring out the order, writing, and art for the team needs to happen as early as possible to give time to iterate or update as we go. I loosely sketched out the concepts for each section then worked with a 2D artist to create the final artwork.
Aghanim’s Labyrinth
Custom games is core to Dota 2’s history and presence. Creating Aghnim’s Labyrinth was the largest custom game the team had taken on. Inspired by rogue-like games and dungeon crawlers we had an idea of something that would become one of the most successful custom games Dota 2 had ever made. I lead design of the overall user experience and visual design for the game. The custom type logo was created by the amazing, Claire Hummel.
Wraith King Arcana
Arcanas are a highly sought after cosmetic reward in the Battle Pass. I worked on the UI for the mini-game which helps you unlock the second style of the Arcana alongside Dhabih Eng. The mini-game tracked which heroes had been killed by you in a match that you had won as Wraith King. We had a beautifully illustrated Dota 2 map with all the heroes by Andrew Wilson that showed your progress by filling in the dead hero you killed.
